Hobby Lobby officially began operation on August 3, 1972 with a small retail store, and has been growing ever since.   Since its founding, this university has embodied the aspirations and determination of the abolitionists who settled on the Kaw River in August 1854. Their goals were to ensure that the Kansas Territory entered the union as a free state, and to establish a university in the new State.
